Don't Worry! No Really ...

30/09/2016 - by Tatev Petrosyan
I remember my mother always telling me to keep my excitement to myself because somehow “evil and jealous eyes” of other people will make my luck turn into disaster. Do you happen to know someone who wears an “evil-eye” jewellery for added protection?

Although some of us may recognise that these superstitious beliefs stops us from fully enjoying our successful moments, all the while causing unnecessary stress and makes us more anxious, then why is it that we still continue holding on to these pattern?

One of the most common reasons for why we keep doing it is that most of us believe that if we keep worrying about the issue then it will make us find solutions even before they are needed. In short, “we will be “covered”, we will be safe.

And then there are other people who have yet another reason for the constant worrying and that is to do with their self-image: they would not feel responsible enough human being if they allowed themselves to feel relaxed about a certain situation.

Another reason we keep spinning our worrisome thoughts in our heads is that we believe if we worry enough we will be successful. The same “worrying will create solutions” logic applies here as well.

A very common reason for worry that most of us seem to acquire with age is our worry for our health. The belief behind this one is that if I worry enough then it will make me take care of myself better and have more health checks more frequently. Worry will keep me healthy. Unfortunately, research keeps proving the opposite: relaxed and positive mental state is strongly correlated with better health. Could we not schedule that doctor’s appointment on time without the constant worrying? Is it really the worrying that propels us to book that appointment on time or is it our knowledge or intuition about it?

After having so many conversations with hundreds of clients we would finally see that their knowledge and/or intuition about it was a far better protection system. The moment they saw that, they were off the hook. And that does not mean that once you see this you will never worry again. It simply means that the next time you catch yourself worrying, you will not then turn it into a real fear, by simply recognising that all it really is, is old thinking pattern, that when given no extra time and energy to, it will simply disappear to where it came from – Nothingness!

And that’s how simple it really is. You don’t need years of therapy to look for the reason for why you worry more than the person you compare yourself with. I am not going to give you the latest step 1, step 2, step 3 strategies for beating stress and anxiety, because they don’t really work. Those are somebody else’s best guesses or strategies, which they came up with that worked for them, at one time.  I’d rather give you the best description about what’s true for all human beings on how we create our moment to moment experience of life and once you understand it you will come up with the strategies that works best for you.

The truth is that when we are in a state of anxiety we are a lot less capable of coming up with the best solutions regarding the problem we are facing. Just think of how many times you or others would describe their best ideas or solution come to them “out of the blue” while they were busy doing something enjoyable or relaxing, which somehow allowed them to have more clear mind.

Worry keeps us from being in a clear state of mind and when we are in a clear state of mind that’s when we have access to our innate wisdom and thus it becomes more clear to us what the best course of action regarding any situation is, be it our health, our jobs or anything else that life throws at us. And most importantly, the less we worry the more present we will be in fully immersing and enjoying the many beautiful moments in our lives.

For the first time, cigarette smoking is linked to a major decrease in the concentration of bone marrow progenitor cells. Orthopedic surgeons in Jerusalem linked cigarette smoking to a major decrease in the concentration of bone marrow progenitor cells (BMPCs), which significantly impairs the healing of bone fractures and hinders bone repairing operations. Prof. Meir Liebergall, chairman of the orthopedic surgery department at Hadassah-University Medical Center in Jerusalem’s Ein Kerem, just published his team’s findings in the journal Bone Marrow Research.

Working with colleagues Shaul Beyth, Rami Mosheiff, Ori Safran and Anat Daskal, Liebergall said it is already known that tobacco consumption is associated with musculoskeletal degenerative disorders, delayed fracture healing and failure for bone tissues to unite. BMPCs are known to express CD105 (endoglin), a protein that is central to musculoskeletal healing and regeneration. The researchers thus hypothesized that smoking is associated with lower levels of BMPCs. Samples were collected from consenting patients aged 18 to 65 during the first steps of pelvic surgery.

Thirteen smokers and 13 nonsmokers of comparable age and gender were included in the study, while patients with active infectious or cancer, a history of cytotoxic or radiation therapy, primary or secondary metabolic bone disease or bone marrow dysfunction were excluded. Liebergall noted that “relatively little research has been performed with the aim of studying the effects of smoking on the musculoskeletal system,” as opposed to other organ systems.

BMPCs, also known as multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells, are rare multipotent cells residing in all musculoskeletal tissues that serve as a reservoir for tissue regeneration, the researchers wrote. Due to their capability for multipotent differentiation into specialized cells, and their secretion of a wide range of bioactive molecules, they are central to healing and regeneration, they continued. “Since these cells are rare, it has been difficult to isolate them in quantities that are large enough to evaluate their concentration,” the Hadassah team said. Nonetheless, they managed to develop a safe and effective method.

The study was designed to determine the effect of smoking a pack of cigarettes daily on the BMPC cell population in bone marrow. They found a “significantly lower concentration” of BMPC cells in smokers’ bone marrow, compared to nonsmokers’ bone marrow.

This reduced cell population, they concluded, can lead to reduced bone regeneration in smokers, “with potentially important implications for physiological maintenance and repair in the musculoskeletal system.”

Broken a bone? Then don't smoke if you want it to heal.

In fact, the Cyprus countryside these months is a free organic vegetable market! Mallow, white mustard, nettles, wild lettuce, even asparagus, grow all over the place, ready for picking. These wild greens are most delicious to eat, and a real boost to our health.  Take mallows for instance, these are the plants with the big round leaves that grow on just about every roadside. Of course, it's best not to pick plants next to the road but go a bit further into the fields to pick clean, uncontaminated plants. In Cyprus mallow is mainly eaten boiled with an olive oil and lemon juice dressing. The water in which it was boiled is an excellent herbal drink to soothe the throat. The boiled plant can be used in pies, egg dishes and soups. Mallow has anti-inflammatory, astringent, laxative and diuretic properties. Mallow is one of the most soothing herbs we can find in Cyprus. Tea made from the dry leaves, stems and flowers are an excellent remedy for dry cough, stomach ulcers, inflammation and constipation.

    Wild Asparagus

Wild asparagus is another delectable delicacy. It takes a little skill to spot them in the spiny bush that protects them, but that's all part of the fun when it comes to foraging wild foods. The asparagus are the young shoots of the plant, they contain vitamin A, B and C and are very rich in minerals. Medicinally wild asparagus is a powerful diuretic, its consumption helps in prostate enlargement, urinary problems, kidney stones, gout, arthritis and rheumatism.

Asparagus also helps to lower blood pressure, stimulates and nourishes the liver and pancreas and helps in fluid retention. Furthermore, it lowers blood sugar levels, kills parasites and soothes the intestines. It increases milk flow in breastfeeding women. The seeds of the plant are helpful in male impotence. Do not eat asparagus if you have inflammation in the urinary system, because it will likely worsen the pain. A traditional way to eat wild asparagus is fried with spring onions and egg. The shoots soften and are less bitter if you put them in a bowl of boiling water with salt for 2 minutes before frying.

    White Mustard Plant

White mustard plant is another health booster we can find literally everywhere, with its beautiful yellow flowers. You should only pick the young shoots and tender leaves, with the flower still in bud. Traditionally in Cyprus this plant is eaten boiled, served with an olive oil and lemon juice dressing, but you can add the leaves to egg dishes, make a veggie lasagne or add the young leaves to a salad. The plant is a rich source of vitamins and minerals and an ideal winter food, as it has a warming effect on the body and  has expectorant properties, making it an ideal healing food in coughs and colds. It also ‘cleanses the blood’ and should be an integral part of a winter detox diet. It gives energy and nourishes the entire body.

    Stinging Nettle

Stinging nettle really is one of the most nutritious and medicinal plants. Nettle is very rich in minerals, especially iron, and is the best natural iron supplement, as all of it gets absorbed by the body. It also contains vitamin A, C and K. to use nettle in cooking we pick only the young tender shoots. Nettle makes an excellent soup, as all the healing properties stay preserved. At Cyherbia we serve soup made with all 3 of the above wild greens, it has become a favourite with visitors. Tea made from nettle relieves a number of health problems such as arthritis, asthma, bladder infections, bronchitis, kidney stones, laryngitis, prostate enlargement and seasonal allergies, as the plant contains natural antihistamines. Externally it is a remedy against hair loss, oily hair and dandruff. In Germany today stinging nettle is sold as an herbal medicine for prostate diseases and as a diuretic. It is a common ingredient in other herbal medicines for rheumatic complaints and inflammatory conditions (especially for the lower urinary tract and prostate) The leaf is used as a diuretic, for arthritis, prostatitis, rheumatism, rheumatoid arthritis, high blood pressure and allergic rhinitis.

With all these benefits, why not take a walk in the fields today and forage your dinner!

A new drug technology, developed at the Hadassah Medical Organization to treat fatty liver disease--a condition with no approved effective drug treatment--was given the go-ahead by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for a Phase 2 multi-center clinical trial in the US.

In its severe form (called nonalcoholic steatohepatitis-NASH), fatty liver disease can lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer. Current estimates reveal that at least five percent of the Western world’s population suffers from the disease. The majority of these patients also have diabetes, high blood lipids, and obesity.

The new technology was developed by Prof. Yaron Ilan, Director, Department of Internal Medicine and former president of the Israel Liver Association, and his team in Hadassah’s Liver Unit. Based on feeding natural antibodies against intestinal bacteria associated with fatty liver disease, the treatment reduces inflammation by directly affecting the activity level of regulatory T cells in the liver and fat tissues. “The new drug is based on a novel discovery that bacteria in our gut are relevant for the induction of inflammation in our body, which is associated with liver disease, diabetes, and obesity” said Prof. Ilan. “The new therapy is safe and has no side effect, and we hope the results of the phase II trial will enable us to move forward with its development as a treatment for diabetes and fatty liver disease”.

Hadasit, Hadassah’s technology transfer arm, and Immuron, an Australian biopharmaceutical company, worked together to develop the product. The collaborative effort combines Hadassah’s oral immune modulation approach with antibodies produced by Immuron.

The multi-center clinical trial will involve 120 patients in several leading medical centers in the US and Australia. The cohort will receive the treatment for six months, while monitored for the state of their liver disease, diabetes, and lipid profile.

Clinical trials were already conducted at Hadassah, which confirmed the safety and efficacy of the treatment.

For more than 100 years, Hadassah University Hospital in Jerusalem (www.hadassah-med.com) has been a leader in medicine and nursing in Israel, laying the foundation and setting the standards for the country's modern health care system. The majority of medical breakthroughs in Israel have taken place there. With more than 130 departments and clinics, Hadassah provides Israel's most advanced diagnostic and therapeutic services for the local and national population and a significant number of international patients.

It’s one of those veggies that you should give a little more attention to. I think I’m in the third category and love adding it in my salads, soups, casseroles, stews and vegetable juices.

Here’s some of the health benefits that it can provide you with.

    #1 Helps with Weight Loss

Celery is one of the most perfect vegetables to snack on when you are trying to drop a few kilos or just watching your weight. One large celery stalk is only 10 calories. The only thing to watch out here is to make sure you don’t snack on them with fattening dips or dressings as you’ll just undo all the weight loss benefits !

    #2 Reduces Inflammation

Celery contains anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce pain and inflammation in the body. If you suffer from asthma, acne, arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease it would be an excellent food to add to your meals.

#3 Reduces Stress Levels and Helps Promote Sleep

Do you need some natural stress relief from physical and mental stressors ? If so celery can help since it is pack full of magnesium and an essential oil that helps promote relaxation. Celery sticks make the perfect bedtime snack because it can actually help you fall asleep and stay asleep. The vegetable also works for calming down anxiety and panic attacks since it does contain a medicinal property in it that acts as a natural sedative.

    #4 Promotes Alkaline Balance

Celery contains minerals which help regulate the body’s alkaline balance and which prevents your body from becoming over acidic. An overly acidic body strongly influences the risk for osteoporosis, sarcopenia (muscle loss), fractures and kidney stone formation -- and possibly diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, thyroid problems, cancer and other insidious conditions.

#5 Keeps the Digestive System Working Smoothly

Celery makes an excellent digestive aid. It has plenty of fiber and water. These two elements are important for keeping the digestive system running smoothly and helps to combat and prevent discomforting conditions such as constipation. Celery does contain diuretic properties so those suffering from diarrhea should not consume a large amount of this vegetable because it can make the situation worse.

    #6 Keeps Eyesight Healthy

One large celery stalk a day can provide your body with vitamin A, which is an essential nutrient for maintaining eye health. Considering having some celery sticks each day for snack or adding it to a main dish to help get the potent nutrient from it into your diet.

    #7 Promotes Heart Health

Eating a few stalks of celery each day can help to reduce the bad cholesterol in your body. It also helps to promote proper blood circulation, reduces high blood pressure, which is also essential for keeping your heart health and strong.

    #8 Natural Aphrodisiac

Surprise ! Surprise ! Who would have thought that munching on celery sticks can also help spice up your love life ! Celery promote arousal as it contains two pheromones known as androstenone and androstenol.

    #9 Prevents Cancer

A daily dose of celery is wonderful for preventing certain types of cancers such as pancreatic cancer and breast cancer. This is because celery contains powerful antioxidants in it that inhibits cancer cells.

To receive utmost benefits from celery, it would be recommended that it is best to eat fresh organic celery that is free from harsh pesticides, preservatives and chemicals. This is because fresh organic celery contains the medicinal properties and nutrients in it that are actually beneficial to the body. So snack away, and enjoy this super vegetable. Superfoods are quite simply nutrient dense and complex foods that deliver an exponential punch in comparison to foods often consumed on a daily basis. Utilizing them consistently will dramatically alter your health.

Here are a few that can really accelerate healing your body, or simply fortify it.

    Medicinal Mushrooms

Medicinal mushrooms are high in the super immune enhancing polysaccharides such as beta glucans. They are also one of the best adaptogenic herbs/ superfoods on the earth. Reishi mushroom (also known as Ganoderma), the “mushroom of immortality”, is an immune system nutrient that is suitable for nearly anyone to take, even children. Reishi has antioxidant properties that can protect the human body from radiation and free radicals. It inhibits bacteria, viruses, treats tumours and its adaptogenic quality protects the body against stress. It also treats heart disaes and

As quoted by David Wolfe, “High in super immune-enhancing polysaccharides such as beta glucans, medicinal mushrooms are one of the most intelligent adaptogenic herbs/superfoods on the planet. Reishi mushroom (also known as Ganoderma), the “mushroom of immortality,” is an immune system nutrient that is suitable for nearly anyone to take, even children.  Reishi is the most well studied herb in the history of the world. Reishi has antioxidant properties that protect the body from radiation and free radicals. It inhibits bacteria, viruses, treats tumors and its adaptogenic quality protects the body against stress. It also treats heart disease and high blood pressure.”

Reishi is one of the best ‘all round’ food remedies you can take for healing, regeneration and energy. It’s ability to balance and normalize bodily functions makes it a must for anyone who is serious about healing their body and taking their health to another level.

    Omega 3 Fatty Acids

Good omega 3 fatty acids are one of those food remedies that are generally devoid in today’s world, and are required for proper brain function as well. Typically associated with fish intake, it has become more difficult to get a clean source due to mercury levels.  However, there are other forms such as flax, hemp and chia that can help you avoid that issue if you are not comfortable with your source. Read labels and look for those who specifically indicate that they have gone  through a purification process.

     B-Vitamins

B-Vitamins are highly correlated with our ability to handle stress.  B-12 gets used up in our body quickly just by the stresses and toxicity found in our environment on a daily basis.

As a population gorging ourselves on conventional grains we get plenty of the lower B’s (although, when not organic this is suspect), but we miss getting the very important B-12.  A super food not on this list, but excellent in B-Vitamins including 12, is bee pollen which should be noted due to its dramatic healing properties.

Stress does deplete B-Vitamins, so it has become even more important to supplement in order to keep those levels at an appropriate range.

    Maca

Maca is one of my favourite superfoods. It is adaptogenic, increases energy, endurance, strength and libido. Dried maca powder contains more than 10% protein, nearly 20 amino acids, and 7 essential amino acids. It offers incredible hormone regulation from the top down, supporting the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland, the thyroid, and the adrenals. Maca is also rich in B Vitamins.”

I consume maca regularly for its ability to help balance hormones, and it strength and energy giving properties. You may want to strongly consider this as one of your food remedies before, during, and after pregnancy.

    Probiotics

Probiotics have become crucial to everyone’s health, including women. Since 80% of people are dealing with an imbalance within their inner ecosystem, and 30% have a severe issue, a quality source of probiotics is essential in order for proper healing in the body and maintain good health. This will lead to enhanced immunity as the beneficial bacteria in your body work as part of the immune system.”

    Astragulus

“Astragalus has antioxidants that protects the cell against damage caused by free radicals and is used to protect and support the body’s immune system, including improving the power of the lungs.”

This is another great adaptogen, and typically can be found in superfood formulations.

    Goji Berries

Goji berries are regarded as a longevity, strength-building, and potency food of the highest order. This superfood contains 18 kinds of amino acids, all 8 essential amino acids, up to 21 trace minerals, high amounts of antioxidants, iron, polysaccharides, B and E vitamins, and many other nutrients. They are very high in antioxidants, especially eyesight improving zeaxanthin.”

They are very healing to the liver, and have a wide array of nutrients and minerals to help address deficiencies you are undoubtedly dealing with due to poor quality food supply and other environmental factors.

    Cacao

Raw Expert David Wolf’s favourite  super food “cacao is the highest antioxidant food on the planet, the #1 source of magnesium, iron, chromium, manganese and is also extremely high in PEA. Cacao’s theobromine adds cardiovascular support. Raw chocolate balances brain chemistry, builds strong bones, is a natural aphrodisiac, and elevates your mood”.

Cacao is a powerful super food, but has been bastardized and put into products that ruin it’s potency like conventional chocolate bars.  If you can find pure cacao, you will note that it tastes a bit more bitter, but if balanced with other ingredients correctly, you will find it is delicious and MUCH better for you than the typical fare.

Cacao is great healing superfood as it elevates your mood, and creates happiness.

    Aloe Vera

“The gel of raw aloe vera contains vitamins A, C, and E, the minerals sulfur, calcium, magnesium, zinc, selenium, and chromium, as well as antioxidants, fiber, amino acids, enzymes, sterols, lignans, and most importantly, polysaccharides. The polysaccharides in aloe vera have a particular lubricating effect on the joints, brain, nervous system and the skin. They also have immuno-modulating effects, allowing the body to fight back chronic viral, nanobacterial and fungal infections.”

Aloe Vera is one of those food remedies that are excellent for intestinal health. It is antibacterial and very healing to the intestinal lining, which is a major plus considering most people are living with an abundance of bad bacteria in their system, and an inflamed intestinal wall as a result of it.  Quite simply, aloe vera is a must in your superfoods list.

     A Superfood Cocoa Drink Recipe

A simple drink that incorporates a few of these food remedies is a great way to start your morning:

    3 tablespoons of Cacao
    1 teaspoon of Maca
    1/2 teaspoon of Reishi (Ganoderma)
    1/2 teaspoon of Cinnamon
6 large pitted dates (or your choice of natural sweetener)
4 oz of Sprouted Almond Milk
    12 oz of hot water
    1/8 teaspoon of cayenne pepper
