Trade Unions in Cyprus
Turkish Cypriot Trade Union Federation was founded
in 1954 and by the mid-1980s had about 9,300 members belonging
to fifteen unions, located in North
Nicosia, Kyrenia
and Famagusta.
This federation emphasized practical issues as opposed to
ideology and was a member of the International Confederation
of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) and the European Trade Union
Confederation. It also maintained close ties with the American
Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organization (AFL-CIO).
TÜRK-SEN was closely affiliated with the Confederation of
Turkish Trade Unions, from which it received financial and
technical assistance to promote job unionism in the "TRNC."
Guzelyurt
also had Turkish trade unions.
In both communities, trade unions freely and regularly take
stands on public policy issues affecting workers and maintain
their independence from the authorities. Two of the major
trade unions, one in each community, are affiliated closely
with political parties. Both of the other major unions are
independent.
Many trade unions have formed in Limassol
and South
Nicosia. Addresses and contact information are provided.
There are also Greek trade unions located in Paphos
and Larnaca.
