The Olive Tree Project
Sandstone,
the Olive Tree Project
Sandstone Trading Company Ltd., under the trade name Olive
Tree Project (formally Olive Tree Rescue), started its venture
in May 2005 as a self-financing, not-just-for-profit, private
limited company.
Facts and figures
The symbol of peace and hope, an olive tree, is currently facing perils in Cyprus . Olive trees are being wiped out at an alarming rate, particularly in North Cyprus and Kyrenia region, with law breakers given no prosecution. Official figures in 1975, put the number of olive trees in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus at about 660,000. Since then around 1/3 of these trees have been lost and not only due to the fire of 1995 that struck Kyrenia region. In November 2005, the number of olive trees killed during past 12 months was 10, 000, which is about 200 trees wiped out per week, or one every hour. If it continues at this rate there won't be many olive trees left at all in the near future.

Sandstone's Objectives
To save olive trees from certain death is the company's main aim. Working hard with the government, municipalities, developers and builders alike, Sandstone is trying to protect the olive trees of Northern Cyprus by transplanting the endangered ones to new safe locations and by trying to change public opinion. The olive trees are moved to places where they are wanted and safe - into the gardens of private customers, and thus avoided an imminent danger of being harmed. Sandstone is also pressing the government to protect the estimated 8,000 olive trees on the path of two new roads being built this year and plans are being made to save as many of these as possible.

Olive Tree Project
Building houses, roads and pools seems to be an easy process, but not when the olive trees grow in the very area of a building scheme. Sandstone helps in and out of Kyrenia by moving, free of charge unwanted trees and bringing them to safety. The initiative has so far physically moved over 150 mature olive trees and indirectly has saved many, many more.
