Kyrenia
In Kyrenia you will find The Shipwreck
Museum which houses the oldest recovered shipwreck in
history.
The Bellapais
Monastery is one of the unparalleled samples of Gothic
Art, is situated on the flanks of the Five-finger (Kyrenia)
Mountains. Its name today derives from the French "Abbaye
de la paix", which means "The Peace Monastery".
St.
Hilarion Castle was built to defend the island against
the Arab raids.
The Sourpmagar
Monastery was first founded as a Coptic monastery around
1000 A.D. and it was dedicated to the Alexandrian saint Makarios.
Because of the frequency of the Arab raids, the inhabitants
of Lambousa
moved their settlement to the skirt of the mountain and found
the Lapta
of the present day.
The Kyrenia
castle is thought to have been constructed to protect
the town against the Arab raids in the 7th century.
Kyrenia houses many interesting museums which you can visit
including The Folk
Arts Museum and The Icon
Museum.
Kirsokava
was first used as a cemetery and later as a quarry. There
are many charming sites to see here. In Karmi
Necropolis you can find some ancient tombs.
Vrysi
is a settlement dating to the Neolithic Period where all the
houses are made of mud.
The Anthipanitis
Church is part of an old monastery and its architectural
style is not common in Cyprus.
The Buffavento
Castle one of the three castles constructed on the Kyrenia
Range as a line of defense against the Arab attacks.
Another historical place of interest in the Kyrenia area is
The Hz.
Omer Tomb. The tomb and the small mosque were constructed
by the Ottomans.
