The Sanctuary of Apollo
Ilatis
Lying on private property,
unknown to most Pafians, formed a sacred place of worship
of one of the deities of ancient Greece. Apollo was worshipped
all over Cyprus, in places like Kourio, Idalio, Pafos, Tamassos
and many more. Not only he was regarded a God of sea, shepherds,
spiritual life, medicine and music, but also the protector
of health and good luck. The sanctuary of Apollo consists
of two subterranean rock-hewn rooms, the one is rectangular
the other one of a round shape, linked together via a rock-cut
dromos (way), located in the eastern necropolis of Pafos.
The sanctuary was made by the High Priest Tarvas for the God
Apollo, according to a Cypriot syllabic inscription above
the main entrance. In 4th century B.C., when Pafos was established,
the sanctuary began its function as well.
