Cyprus’ shopping scene has changed dramatically in the last ten years.

The main shopping streets, which until a few years ago were dominated by local mom and pops stores, are now lined with the same shops you would find in any high street or shopping centre in the US or Europe: Zara, Ikea, Mango, Top Shop, Louis Vuitton, Marks & Spencer, Tommy Hilfiger, etc.

Shopping malls have also opened all over the island in recent years. Lemesos boasts the largest one in Cyprus, My Mall, which has its own ice skating rink.

Souvenirs

Items to take home with you which are typical from Cyprus, aside from the local wine and other spirits, include native handicrafts.

Many towns are actually known for a specific product, for example, the ceramics from Kornos and Phini, the embroidery from Lefkara and Omodos, the silver jewellery from Lefkara, basketry from Liopetri and Yeroskipou or the woven wares from Phiti.

You can find these at the many souvenir shops at the tourist areas and also at the local branches of the Cyprus Handicraft Centre in the old area of Lefkosia, Larnaka, Lemesos and Pafos.

Shopping Hours

Shops have different opening hours according to the season.

During the winter period (November 1st to March 31) they open at 9am and close at 7pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2pm on Wednesdays, 8pm on Fridays and 3pm on Saturdays. Everything is closed on Sundays. Supermarkets usually open between 7am and 8pm.

During the summer months (April 1st to October 31) they open at 9am and close at 8.30pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2pm Wednesdays, 9.30pm on Fridays and 5pm on Saturdays.

From June 15 to 31 August 31 the afternoon rest measure applies, and the shops are usually closed between 2pm and 5pm. Sunday is never a working day. Supermarkets usually open between 7am and 8pm.

Kiosks are available in all urban areas and are open longer hours, some even offering 24 hour service. Some bakeries stay open until 11pm but many are open 24 hours. These sell much more than just newspapers or bread, some of the larger ones operating as mini-markets.
