Dorians Challenge: An obstacle run unlike any other held in Cyprus
A new challenge is coming to Cyprus – Dorians Challenge and it promises to be challenging, much challenging. We met up with the founder and Managing Director, Vangelis Eleftheriou and put a few questions to him.
Welcome to Cyprus.com Vangeli and taking the time to meet with us to discuss Dorians Challenge.
1. So, what is Dorians Challenge?
Dorians Challenge is not one, but a new series of obstacle runs and races inspired by the ancient Dorian tribe and Greek mythology. The first run will take place on 15 October 2016 in Kornos. This first obstacle run, held on a single day, is 5km long and will have a total of 20 obstacles that will challenge the strength, endurance, perseverance, mental toughness and team spirit of all participants.
Dorians Challenge is also a community. We are an open source of information with advice on physical fitness and nutrition to help you both prepare for the runs and races and improve your performance as well as lead a healthier lifestyle.
2. We have had other such events and courses over the past few years, what makes Dorians Challenge different?
We place enormous value to the health and safety of our people, the participants and the spectators. Dorians Challenge is among the very few obstacle course organisers worldwide following the OHSAS18000 International Occupational Health and Safety Policies and procedures to identify, control and decrease the risks associated with the organisation of such events.
During the first Dorians Challenge, the participants will have the opportunity to conquer obstacles the world has never seen. Thera Erupts, Mount Olympus, Hercules Trail and Tartarus are just few of our signature obstacles.
Our team consists of companies and individuals that partner with world known obstacle run and race organisers including Spartan Race, Tough Mudder and Bear Grylls Survival Race. This allows us to introduce new technologies and to ensure a well organised and administered event.
Finally, the location makes Dorians Challenge different from any other similar event. Participants will make their way to the finish line by crossing fields, hills, steep drops, riverbeds and thick undergrowth, all just next to the A1 highway. In short, our venue has it all!
3. Is this a Cypriot company?
Dorians Challenge is a 100% Cypriot brand and company. It is an initiate that goes back to December 2014 where we first defined the potential of the sport in Cyprus and abroad. As a team we have the skills and experience to initiate and run out the project. With thorough planning, strategic partnerships and probably 16 hours of work every day, we have reached the stage where we have an event that not only have received a great deal of interest and acceptance here in Cyprus, but is also being compared to the most well know international obstacle courses abroad.
4. Who is Dorians Challenge aimed at?
Dorians Challenge is for almost everyone over the age of 18. From first time obstacle runners and people who exercise moderately, to elite athletes. People with serious health problems and pregnant women can only join the event as spectators.
5. Is the event in October going to be a one-off or do you have more events planned?
Dorians Challenge is a series of obstacle runs and races – not just one race. In 2017 we plan to organise four new obstacle runs and races.
- Dorians Students Challenge
will be for students between 15 and 18 years old
- Dorians Ultimate Challenge
is a 12km timed race with 24 obstacles
- Dorians Coastal Challenge
with obstacles placed at the coast as well as in the sea!
Finally, by the end of 2017 we are planning to host the first survival race in Cyprus; a 24 hour race for the toughest of the toughest – this will be epic
6. How is Dorians Challenge linked with the Karaiskakio Foundation?
In May 2016, Dorians Challenge and Karaiskakio Foundation established a strategic partnership under the name “Dorian Donor” – the first official Bone Marrow Donor Group in Cyprus. Dorians Challenge, as an obstacle course organiser, aims to raise awareness for the fight against leukemia and to enrich the Cyprus Bone Marrow Donor Registry. During our events participants, spectators, volunteers and anyone interested can become a volunteer Bone Marrow Donor just by a simple cheek swab.
7. Do you have any last words to say about Dorians Challenge?
While my name may be at the top of this interview, I am by no means the sole contributor of Dorians Challenge. There are a number of people and companies behind this new series of obstacle courses who deserve to be acknowledged.
I would like to thank Constantinos Yiallouros, the co-founder and Operations Director of Dorians Challenge and Demetris Koumides, our Communications Director; the person in charge of everything visual.
Special thanks should go to our associates based in the UK; Trumin.com, Epic Action Imagery and Harris Hawk Media.
I would like to express gratitude to Famous Sports - our Gold Sponsor as well as the official sponsors of the first event which are the Cyprus Tourism Organisation, Cyprus.com, Sci-MX Nutrition Cyprus, Kemanes Print Shop, GE Solar and Presse Café.
On behalf of the Management, I would like to thank the people who have registered to Dorians Challenge and of course our volunteers. With you, we wouldn’t have made it.
Lastly, I would like to thank our families for unremitting encouragement, support and patience.
Thank you Vangeli for all of that – it looks as though this will be a huge event.
