The decor, most of the food was OK.
For me, this is a story of three parts - the Good, the Bad and the Ugly.
THE GOOD - when this restaurant was first set up by Andreas (I think about 20 years ago) with a grant from the Governement, he had a wonderful traditional tavern. They had a great meze, and when a pot or dish ran out, Andreas wife would cook something else so you never had the same meze twice - you didn't even have the same meze as the table next to you that started 30 minutes before you. But this was great because it didn't matter whatever she cooked, the food was excellent. At the end of the meal, fruit, coffee and a glass (or two) of village Zivania (or a drink) was included in the price and that was 7 Cyprus pounds per person.
THE BAD - Andreas moved on (he was into his 60's) and sold the restaurant. It was taken over by a couple of gentlemen that had been running a restaurant in Paphos. They did do the place up very nice and it looked good. The food wasn't too bad either - although one dish that we had (the stifado) was not good. What was bad, was the price that they charged for the drinks. It was ridiculous for them to charge 2 pounds for a bottle of KEO beer and 8 pounds for a bottle of Agios Onoufrios red wine. The winery is about 50 yards out of the front door to the left and anyone can buy a case of wine (12 + 1 free) for 24 pounds (2 pounds per bottle). What on earth gives them (the new owners) the right to charge FOUR TIMES the retail price of the wine, let alone the price they get it at which is going to be less than that.
THE UGLY - Unfortunately, this is another example of greedyness, where an established restaurant has been taken over and the new owners have tried to make a million in the first 10 minutes of opening. When we questioned them about the prices of the drinks, they tried to justify the price by saying that the food was cheap (8.50 pounds per person) and that they had to make a profit on the drinks - ridiculous! Unfortunately, they would not listen to reason - they "...knew best...". Instead of drinking 3 bottles at 6 pounds each, we only drank 1 - 18 pounds compared to 8 - I know who lost out there.
If only people would stop thinking that customers are stupid and that they can trick them every time.
The prices are Cyprus Pounds - so as you can tell my last visit there was before January 1, 2008 when we changed to the Euro. I live in Nicosia and used to visit Araouzos on average once every two months and my friend who lives in Peyia one to two times a month. Since that day - neither of us (and a few other friends) have ever set foot in it again.
