Freedom Dolls is a Non-Profit making organization which is based in Larnaca, Cyprus and works with victims of human trafficking. The main aim of the charity is to help, support and empower women who have been sexually exploited. To do this, fund raising events have been organised in order to raise awareness of the problem on the island. The money raised through such fundraising events – together with donations – contribute towards clothing, food and any household products the victims may need.
One of the main aims is to raise money for the women who will receive one-to-one care, advice and rehabilitation. The ladies will receive assistance from a psychologist and counselor in order to assist their reintegration back into society. The victims make the Freedom Dolls which not only help from a therapeutic perspective but also provides the women with an income. These dolls are made individually by the victims and no two dolls are the same. Each doll has her own passport as this is one of the first things taken from a victim when she is trafficked. Why is this charity needed?
There are a large number of women trafficked on the island. Over the years, there has been a shift in the different nationalities trafficked to the island. In the past, many of the victims came from the Philippines but now the main nationalities trafficked are Romanian and Bulgarian, once these countries joined the EU, the borders opened and trafficking became much easier. Once on the island their lives are not their own! Some are raped into submission in order to provide a sexual service for the traffickers and the customers. Once the victims are submissive, they can be placed with between 30 and 40 clients a day – often working day and night. Others are used as human factories for harvesting their eggs which are sold for up to 5,000 euros a time to Cypriot women who seek IVF and the victims receive nothing.
Although this is a global problem Freedom Dolls is doing all it can to help in Cyprus to aid victims of Human Trafficking, donations are always needed anything from money to food, even bits of costume Jewellery and wool to make the dolls.
