The Friends of Cinema Society was established in 1990, as a non-profit organisation, by a group of people who adored the art of cinema, in a time when movie-theatres in Cyprus remained few and beaten by the power of the household video.

The Friends of Cinema Society took over by the two cine-clubs which operated in Nicosia from the previous decade, and renewed their mission for supplying Cypriot cinephiles with a quality, alternative selection of films, escaping the narrow margins offered by commercial, Hollywood cinema. Since its' establishment, the Friends of Cinema Society carries out frequent screenings three times a week, running through most of the year. With dedications to directors, "schools" of cinema, but also with screenings of films which bare the stamp of artistic excellence, it continues to envelope a unique means of education for cinephiles in Cyprus.

The Society was the first to bring forward to the Cypriot viewer, films from countries as diverse and distant as China, Iran, and Japan. With the popularity and recognition of Greek cinema, the Cypriot viewer was able to finally view modern, Greek productions by distinguished artists.

Through various festivals (European, French, Spanish, German), Cyprus is able to admire films which are awarded important prizes by international critics, thus bringing state-of-the-art trends of world cinema to Cyprus.
