East of the Sanctuary of Apollo Hylates, you will find the ruins of the ancient stadium of Kourion, discovered by archaeologists in 1939.
The stadium has a U-shaped plan, with seven rows of seats which would have accommodated around 6000 spectators. It was built in the 2nd century A.D. and was used until the end of the 5th century.
You can sit on the stadium's seats and imagine what it must have been like to view ancient athletes running on its track. The stadium was built probably for pentathlon events during the 2nd century.
Highlights:
• An impressive stadium from the 2nd century AD
Look Out For:
• The whole archaeological area of Kourion attracts lots of visitors, so it is recommended to visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon if you wish to avoid the crowds
• Wear comfortable shoes and have a bottle of water with you if visiting in the summer months, as the entire site or Kourion is rather large and there is some walking and climbing involved
• You will need about two hours if you wish to visit the entire complex
