Things you should know about telecommunications, electrical appliances and Internet access.

Electricity

The electrical supply system is operated on AC 220-240 volts. As a rule, electrical outlets correspond to British standards, with three-prong plugs.

You can find outlet adaptors at every department store and even at some grocery shops for around €1.

If you are visiting from a country that uses a different electrical supply voltage, e.g. the United States, then it is advisable not to bring small electrical appliances such as shavers or hair dryers, as they are likely to burn even with the use of a transformer.

Laptops are equipped with their own transformers and will only require the use of an adaptor to fit in the outlet.

Phones

The Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (CYTA) manages the phone system in Cyprus. Phone booths are scarce and operated by tele-cards that you can buy from most kiosks, banks and of course from CYTA offices.

To call overseas from Cyprus you need to dial 00 (double zero) and then your country’s code. Cyprus’ country code when dialling from abroad is 357.

All phone numbers in Cyprus (except emergency numbers) whether they are mobile or landlines are a uniform eight digits.

All numbers starting with 2 are fixed lines (22 for Lefkosia numbers, 25 for Lemesos, 24 for Larnaka, 26 for Pafos and 23 for Ayia Napa/Protaras); those beginning with 9 are mobiles; a number starting with 8000 means that it is a free-phone service, while six-digit numbers starting with 77 are the island-wide access numbers.

It is interesting to note that Cyprus currently offers some of the lowest international phone rates in the world.

Internet Access

While internet penetration in Cyprus is on the rise, the number of internet cafes is quite limited.

If you decide to bring your laptop to stay connected, be aware that wi-fi access is not available everywhere yet.

Bring all your necessary connecting cables, as phone cables in Cypriot hotels tend to be flat (UK type).
